I feel it my duty to point out the hypocrisy in our nuclear weapons foreign weapons policy as it seems that there is not a lot of that done in the US press.
Here, Iran is refusing to accept more stringent nuclear facilities inspections by the IAEA because Israel, who everyone knows has a large nuclear arsenal, does not submit to the same inspections regime. In fact, Israel has never been a signator to the NPT.
An Iranian envoy said Monday his government will not submit to extensive nuclear inspections while Israel stays outside the global treaty to curb the spread of atomic weapons.
“The existing double standard shall not be tolerated anymore by non-nuclear-weapon states,” Ambassador Ali Asghar Soltanieh told a meeting of the 190 countries that have signed the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty.
Nuclear safeguards are far from universal, he said, adding that more than 30 countries are still without a comprehensive safeguard agreement with the International Atomic Energy Agency to ensure full cooperation with that U.N. body.
“Israel, with huge nuclear weapons activities, has not concluded” such an agreement or submitted its facilities to the IAEA’s safeguards, Soltanieh said.
Soltanieh also made a good point about the safeguards agreement. Canada is apparently one who hasn’t entered into a safeguard’s agreement with the IAEA, so therefore we should sanction Canada too right?
In any case, the inflammatory language used mostly by Israel these days has continued with Shimon Peres stating that:
“If a combination of a fanatic leadership, a terroristic center and a nuclear bomb will come together, it’s a nightmare for the world,” the Israeli president told foreign reporters Monday in reference to Iran’s atomic ambitions.
“It’s in a way more complicated than in the time of the Nazis. Hitler didn’t have a nuclear bomb.”
