Big rumors of war with between Israel, Hezbollah and Syria.

Short post on worrisome signs.  Here in this article on JTA, there is a report that Israel has given Syria a warning over Hezbollah:

Israel warned Syria to prevent Hezbollah from mounting attacks in solidarity with the embattled Palestinians of the Gaza Strip.

Citing Israeli and European sources, Reuters reported Friday that Jerusalem passed Damascus a secret message last month via an unnamed foreign mediator.

The message was that, should Israel mount a major sweep of Gaza and should Hezbollah retaliate with its own attacks from Lebanon, Israel would hold Damascus responsible — meaning a possible war with Syria.

On the other hand, it seems very clear to Israel that Hezbollah is ready to begin attacking them in solidarity with Gaza if Israel chooses to invade Gaza or do anything more than what they are currently doing.

An Israeli intelligence assessment claims Hezbollah has completed its military and logistic preparations for a new war with the regime.

Hezbollah’s preparations, according to a report by the Ynetnews, reinforce the intelligence estimate that a confrontation in northern parts of occupied Palestine is ‘closer than a wide-scale’ conflict in the Gaza Strip.

This may be one of the reasons why the Israeli military is not rushing into a comprehensive operation in Gaza, the report added.

The annual intelligence review, presented to cabinet ministers by officials from the domestic spy agency Shin Bet, Military Intelligence and the Mossad, said that the likelihood for a wide-scale Hamas attack in 2008 was slim.

But the likelihood that “Hezbollah will attack Israel” is higher than the likelihood for an escalation on other fronts, the report alleges.

Of course Hezbollah seems to be ready to acquiesce Israel’s vision of Armageddon after the assassination of Moughniyah last month:

BEIRUT (Reuters) – Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah vowed on Friday to avenge the assassination of his senior commander Imad Moughniyah and threatened to deal Israel a crushing blow if it attacked Lebanon again.“I swear to you Haj Imad, your blood will not go to waste,” Nasrallah told a Hezbollah rally commemorating Moughniyah’s death in a car bombing in Damascus on February 12.“We will defend ourselves the way we choose, at the time we choose, in the place we choose… With our will and bravery we will defend ourselves and our blood,” he said.

As you recall, after the mysterious attack of Israeli planes against a mysterious target in Syria in 9/07, Iran threatened retaliation in solidarity with Syria if Syria was attacked:

Jerusalem ( – Iran will unleash a barrage of hundreds of missiles against Israel and U.S. targets in Iraq if Iran or Syria are attacked, an Iranian Web site threatened on Monday, in comments linked to an alleged Israeli air strike on a secret Syrian nuclear facility.

The threat comes after weekend reports in American and British media gave details of the alleged Israeli air strike on Sept. 6, in which Israeli fighter planes reportedly bombed a depot holding nuclear materials inside Syria that reportedly had been supplied by North Korea.

The Iranian threat also comes a day after French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner said that the international community should “prepare for the worst … which is war” against Iran.

In response to Kouchner’s comments, Iran’s official news agency IRNA said in an editorial on Monday that “the new occupants of the Elysee [presidential palace] want to copy the White House” and accused French President Nicolas Sarkozy of taking on “an American skin.”

In another apparent reaction to the Syrian incident, the Persian-language Web site AsrIran reported Iran has 600 Shihab-3 missiles that it will launch at Israel the first day that Iran or Syria are attacked, Israel’s state-run radio — the “Voice of Israel” — said on Monday.

With a possible range of up to 1,260 miles, the Shihab-3 could reach all of Israel, including its nuclear reactor in southern Israel, the site said.

The Web site also said that Iran would launch 10 to 15 missiles at U.S. targets inside Iraq if either Iran or Syria is attacked.

These are not good signs my friends.  Not good at all.

Rumors are not a weapon. Rumors are based on information gathered from sources that know something about the situation a little more than Abe Bird does:

“A war between Syria and Israel is certainly a possibility, Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Moallem was quoted as saying Sunday.”

“In an interview with the Kuwaiti newspaper Al Anba, Moallem was asked if he believed that Israel was preparing for war against Lebanon or Syria in order to avoid addressing internal issues. “Everything is possible”, he answered, adding that “every rational person should prepare for every eventuality in the wake of the crazy policies advocated by the US, whose goals are certainly not achieving stability and security in the region.”
