From the Haaretz this morning:
At least 34 Palestinians were killed, among them 10 civilians – including five children and three women – during an ongoing Israel Defense Forces ground incursion near the northern Gaza Strip town of Jabaliya which began before dawn Saturday.
Five IDF soldiers were wounded during the fighting – three of them lightly and two others who suffered light to moderate injuries. The soldiers were evacuated to Soroka Medical Center in Be’er Sheba for treatment.
Sources in Gaza report that IDF soldiers exchanged heavy gunfire with Palestinian gunmen on the eastern outskirts of Jabaliya, situated 2-3 kilometers from the fence which lies on the Israel-Gaza border.
Advertisement The ground forces, which included units from Givati Brigades, the Armored Corps, and the Engineering Corps, received air support from the Israel Air Force.
IAF planes launched missiles at groups of armed Palestinians during the fighting.
Teh dead civilians are believed to include a 17-year-old girl and her 16-year-old brother, a 45-year-old man and his 20-year-old son, and two sisters thought to be in their early 20s.
Tareq Dardouna, a resident of the Jabaliya area, told The Associated Press that a relative was killed outside his home in the crossfire that began raging at 3 A.M.
“His body is still on the ground,” Dardouna said in a telephone interview from his home, where he was tending to four wounded people. “Ambulances tried to come, but they came under fire. … We are in a real war.”
Hamas fighters were unbowed by the spiraling violence.
“The Zionist forces failed in Gaza before,” said Abu Obeida, a spokesman for Hamas’ military wing. “We will respond to any aggression… with every available means.”

Reuters was guilty of mistranslation. Vilnai did not use the word for holocaust, which would have required the definite article “ha”. He used the word destruction. One must know Hebrew to realize the truth of this, as do I.
Thanks Elyakatz for that. Though it doesn’t diminish Israel’s murders any I appreciate the clarification there. It’s sort of like the US and Israeli mistranslations of the Iranian President’s words which are being perpetuated and used as a pretext for a future war on Iran… only the Shoah mistranslation cannot be used as a pretext for a future war as Israel is already in the act of murdering Gazans.
Interesting. Did you have the same views when Israelis were being murdered by suicide bombers, and when peaceful residents of Sderot were being murdered and maimed?
The kill ratio in the region always being about 100:1 Palestinians to Israelis, my concern is mostly for the Palestinians. I deplore any sort of carnage, including Palestinian rockets which rarely kill Israelis (something like 11 since 2003) and suicide bombings which have halted for a long time now. On the other hand, there is continuous carnage being carried out by the IDF on Palestine via both sanctions and military means and you have shown your inclination in past comments that you care nothing for Palestinian life.
If the kill ratio indicates that Israel is in the wrong, you must assume that the Allies were wrong during WWII.
I care about all human life. The Palestinians are the people who continually initiate the aggression. It isn’t a question of not caring. But to egg them on and make excuses for them because they are losing is no different than handing an alcoholic a drink and then feeling sorry for him, maybe suing the manufacturer of the drink when the alcoholic goes on a bender.

I must apologize for one thing. I mixed you up with Katznelson, who has mentioned in the past that he enjoys shooting Palestinians. Forgive me my mistake.
Thank you for the apology. He probably named himself after Burl Katznelson, who was David Ben-Gurion’s closest advisor. (Home-schooled too, due to a sickly childhood.)
I don’t agree with the deliberate targeting of any civilians. But when Hamas callously uses their civilian population as human shields, often against the will of those civilians, and shoots rockets from school yards, killing and maiming Israelis, Israel is forced into a moral dilemma, and Hamas knows this. Radical Islam does not value human life. It only values “honor” — at any cost.
According to International Law, Israel has an obligation to defend her population. To not do so is also a crime.
Conditions in Gaza are heartbreaking. I have lived in Israel though, I have to say, many Israelis also live in conditions that Americans would consider extremely substandard. I have lived it and seen it for myself. Israel is not a wealthy nation by any means. I think I heard an estimate that 1/3 of the Israeli children (Jewish and Arab) live under the poverty level. There are many, many homeless people, again, Jewish and Arab, in Jerusalem. Many families live in the tunnel systems in Israel, or in homemade tents in the warmer areas.
People are suffering. To merely decry the suffering without analyzing the cause, and to claim that Israel must the the problem because so far Israel has successfully defended herself, only results in more injustice. We need to know the truth. The truth is, the Arab people are dominated by leaders who do not value them as people. Watch Wafa Sultan sometime on Youtube. She dares to take on this brutal version of Islam. There are Arabs who dare to speak up about the root of the problems in the Arab/Muslim world. They usually end up with a fatwa (edict to be killed) placed on them.

Well, you are not abusive and there is no reason to delete your comment here. You are welcome to comment and your dissenting viewpoint is valued as well.
Having said so, I believe that when you say that we must get to the root of the problem is the Israeli occupation of land that is not theirs. The root of the problem is that the Palestinians tried for years to settle the occupation by peaceful means and were rebuffed continually, all the while having more land taken from them. Israel has taught Palestine that might makes right, that violence is the way to achieve ones objectives. Peaceful means don’t work.
I yearn for peace for both sides. I don’t want Israeli children to fear for their lives any more than I want Palestinian children to. I consider myself a citizen of the world and all people my brothers and sisters. How can we countenance the holding of an entire people, 1.5 million people, in an open air prison, cut off from the rest of the world, forced to live in abject poverty with 80% of the population depending on food aid from the UNRWA? How can we countenance the extrajudicial imprisonments of thousands and thousands of Palestinians held without trial? How can we countenance the purposefull destruction of sewage plants, electrical plants, water purification facilities etc. which are war crimes, while the perpetrator of the crimes, Israel, has the Geneva convention responsibility to ensure the safety and well being of the population living on the land it occupies? How can we countenance the theft of water by Israel from Palestinian territories so that in the hottest season, the water is diverted to Israelis so their lawns can remain green and their pools remain full? How can we countenance a Jewish state which makes its arab population 2nd class citizens? How can we countenance the Nakba wherein the birth of terrorism was given by its mother in Israel to the deaths and destruction of Palestinian Arabs? How can we countenance the numerous UN Security Council Resolutions ignored by Israel, to return the land to Palestinians immediately?
Israel has its foot on Palestines neck and Palestine tries to reach up and bite Israel’s ankle. The only means available for recourse at this time is the rocket attacks apparently. The violence will not end with a cessation of rocket attacks. The only just way to end the violence is to first end the violence of the occupation by the occupiers.
Thank you for putting the welcome mat out for me. It’s refreshing to visit a blog with an opposing viewpoint, and be treated well. The other blog was just out to smear me, because I disagree with them. That’s what prompted me to archive my comments. I have no way of disproving I wasn’t abusive on her blog because I was naive enough to believe she would handle my comment honestly. When I visit a blog, I consider myself as being in a similar status as a guest in someone’s home. It’s not my way to be verbally abusive.
Deleting my comments because she didn’t like them would have been more honest. Oh well. I won’t bother with that one anymore. They want to believe what they want to believe.
As far as your reply, these are things that are claimed to be happening to the Gazans and to the Palestinian Arabs. I have trouble believing it all, because I know that within Islam, it is perfectly acceptable to lie to “infidels”. I have also seen some pretty amazing proof of their dishonesty. Faked funerals, riot appointments with the press blah blah blah.
When I look at a map of the Middle East I see something different than you see. I see an Arab world that is huge, and refuses to give one little sliver of land to the Jewish people. They use their Palestinian brethren callously. It’s the Arab world that keeps these people caged, in order that these suffering communities will become a festering sore that they can then hold Israel responsible to fix. I don’t see and Palestinian/Israeli conflict. I see an ARAB/Israeli conflict. Look at map of the region sometime.
The Israeli communities of Gush Katif proved that poverty is not a given in that small, sandy piece of real estate. If economically strapped Israel can succeed in such an enterprise, why can’t the Gazans? The Israelis gave them a fortune in greenhouses and agricultural infrastructure. Do you know what they did with it? Their PRIDE overtook them and they destroyed them. The farmers sold those greenhouses for a pittance of their true worth. If Jews could make a nice life on the beaches of Gaza, or anywhere in Gaza, so can Arabs. Jews do it in the Negev. It takes community cooperation.
The Jewish community focuses on LIFE, on community, on cooperation with each other, on supporting each other. The Arabs in the region, in contrast, focus on revenge. So, they are poor and they suffer.
