And why are we killing a million people in Iraq again?

Of course, to bring the news of the previous post home to the reader, this is a major reason we have killed 1 million people in Iraq.  Oil.

As you know, the Bush administration has been pushing heavily for the new oil law to be signed by the Iraqi parliament.  As reported here earlier, this law is basically a way to get Iraq to promise to give 100% control of its oil resources away to foreign oil companies, and not a promise to share oil revenues among all of Iraq as it is advertised to be:

And, not surprisingly, the oil law is pretty unpopular among the average Iraqi:

And, now we have this little tidbit (which I cannot verify the truthfulness of, but wouldn’t be surprised if it were true).

An Iraqi MP preferred to remain anonymous told the newspaper that highly confidential negotiations took place by representatives from American oil companies, offering $5 million to each MP who votes in favor of the Oil and Gas law.

The amount that could be paid to pass the votes do not exceed $150 million dollars in the case of $5 million to each MP, pointing out that the Oil law requires 138 votes to pass, which the Americans want to guarantee in many ways, including vote-buying, intimidation and threats!

Focusing on the heads of parliamentary blocs and influential figures in the parliament to ensure the votes, the Americans guaranteed the Kurdish votes in advance but they are seeking enough votes to pass and approve the law as soon as possible.

This is what secret combinations are about.  Profits… at the expense of life (at least a million in the case of Iraq).
