IDF clears itself of cluster bomb violations in Lebanon. No surprises here.

Isn’t this nice.  Israel’s Defense Forces have investigated themselves and found themselves to be not guilty of any sort of crime in the cluster bombing of Southern Lebanon last year.

As you recall, there was a date set for a ceasefire and Israel knew this date and therefore, in the last 72 hours bombed southern Lebanon massively (about 3 million bomblets) with this worst kind of indiscriminate killer, known as the cluster bomb.  The problem with cluster bombs besides killing everything in a huge radius, is that the failure rate is so high, leaving numerous land mines in populated places that continue to kill for years after the conflict is over.

In Lebanon, conservative numbers have 30 killed since the ceasefire from cluster bomblets, and 180 at least have been injured.  The USA has been investigating Israel’s use of the weapons the USA sold to Israel, but I haven’t heard of an outcome yet and don’t expect any sort of indictment of Israel to come from the USA.

In spite of the fact that cluster bombs have killed about 98,000 civilians around the world, the USA wholeheartedly approves of their use.

These bombs are still killing 120 people a year in Laos and killed 38,000 people in Vietnam.  More than 4,000 Iraqi civilians have been killed or injured by our own cluster bombs since the Iraqi war.

It is notable that Senator Hillary Clinton voted with the Republicans to keep funding for Cluster bombs while most Democrats voted against this.

This is an arena where the US and Israel share a great deal in common: hyper-concern with the procedures of the law, essentially zero concern with the real meaning of the law. I have no doubt the Israeli commission or grand jury or whatever it was involved lots of man hours, a great many interviews and investigations, etc. But the conclusion was known before it started: all actions taken by the self-proclaimed good guys are obviously “necessary self-defense”. If there was any infraction it would have been just going overboard here or there, a “rogue” soldier or commander here or there. Exact same thing happens in the US military. It’s important to remember that – when people approach the Israelis or the US with charges of illegality, they will immediately present you with a phalanx of lawyers who will show you in hyper-detail why no actually it’s ok to slaughter people by the dozens, hundreds, or hundreds of thousands as the case may be – down section and paragraph. It’s important not to get caught in that lawyer’s trap. One must either stick to the case of the big picture laws or simply argue on moral grounds. The law itself has become corrupted at the practical level. One of the key points being that the entire legal system is supposed to be set up to ensure that the accuser can not also be the judge (well, except perhaps in the French system) – but in Israel and the US (other places too) the same parties are allowed to be judge, jury, and executioner. If you question they’ll accuse you of eating bald eagles or some other unpatriotic act.

Nice analysis Arab. Sounds much like the legal system I imagine to have been in place in Christ’s time which is why he often severely criticized the lawyers and doctors of law. Truly the tangle of law we see today cannot be that much different from what was had in the time of Alma and Amulek in the Book of Mormon when Amulek said the following in Alma 10:

27 And now behold, I say unto you, that the foundation of the destruction of this people is beginning to be laid by the unrighteousness of your lawyers and your judges.

Of course they found themselves not guilty. They were investigating themselves. Would you incriminate yourself? I mean honestly.

Sort of like what happens when the CIA carries out an internal investigation.
