House Resolution 362 is really a scary thing to consider. It has been endorsed by 146 cosponsors and has momentum with reportedly 43 cosponsors jumping on the last two days. This resolution calls for a naval blockade against Iran. As Wikipedia explains, this is an act of war:

It is the third part of the action portion of the resolution, after all of the “whereas” B.S. statements. It says:
(3) demands that the President initiate an international effort to immediately and dramatically increase the economic, political, and diplomatic pressure on Iran to verifiably suspend its nuclear enrichment activities by, inter alia, prohibiting the export to Iran of all refined petroleum products; imposing stringent inspection requirements on all persons, vehicles, ships, planes, trains, and cargo entering or departing Iran; and prohibiting the international movement of all Iranian officials not involved in negotiating the suspension of Iran’s nuclear program;

This exact sort of action was apparently proposed by Israeli PM Olmert last month:
According to the Haaretz daily, at a meeting in Jerusalem with the speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, Ehud Olmert said, “The present economic sanctions [against Iran] have run out of steam,” and proposed “a naval blockade of Iran,” using the U.S. navy to limit movement in and out of the Islamic Republic by Iranian merchant ships.

Senate Resolution 580 is the sister of HR 362 and is apparently also picking up steam with 19 cosponsors in a week.
AIPAC is pushing for the resolution to pass of course:
Congressional insiders credit America’s powerful pro-Israel lobby for the rapid endorsement of the bills. The American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) held its annual policy conference June 2-4, in which it sent thousands of members to Capitol Hill to push for tougher measures against Iran. On its website, AIPAC endorses the resolutions as a way to ”Stop Irans Nuclear Proliferation” and tells readers to lobby Congress to pass the bill.

This is really bad news. If the US imposes a naval blockade/act of war against Iran, we will be at war with Congress’s implicit approval. Though the body of the resolution says:
Whereas nothing in this resolution shall be construed as an authorization of the use of force against Iran
If Congress passes this resolution they are essentially creating the stage for the US to get into a war with Iran. This is the same as declaring war on Iran!!! This has got to be stopped.

1 Response to “US Congress seeks to declare war on Iran with HR 362 and SR 580. Naval blockade is an act of war.”
